The District of Columbia (D.C.) has specific licensing requirements for health care professionals in order to practice in the district. The doh licensing demands are depending on the type of healthcare provider. All healthcare professionals must register with the Department of Health (DOH) in order to be eligible to practice in the district.

For physicians and surgeons, the licensing requirements include completing a residency program, passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX), and obtaining a license from the D.C. Board of Medicine.
Physicians must also hold a current DEA number and maintain malpractice insurance. Nurse practitioners must complete a Master's degree in nursing and pass a national certification exam.
They must also obtain a license from the D.C. Board of Nursing and maintain malpractice insurance coverage. Pharmacists must complete an accredited Pharmacy program, obtain a Pharm.D. degree, obtain a license from the D.C. Board of Pharmacy, and hold a current DEA number.
Physical therapists must complete an accredited Physical Therapy program, obtain a license from the D.C. Board of Physical Therapy Examiners, and maintain malpractice insurance coverage.
Dentists must complete an accredited Dental program, obtain a license from the D.C. Board of Dentistry, and maintain malpractice insurance coverage. Psychologists must complete an accredited Psychology program, obtain a license from the D.C. Board of Psychology, and hold a current DEA number.
